Cardiovascular disease proving a greater risk in people aged over 40, as the body’s natural cardioprotection decreases

We’re typically living longer – by 2030 it’s estimated that 25 % of Europeans will be over 65 – but this can bring with it long-term health problems. Even with a healthy lifestyle, simply being older puts extra stresses on the body. Our cardiovascular system, in particular, can be affected. But there’s plenty we can do to support it as we get older, before resorting to medications such as aspirin.

What happens to blood platelets over the age of 40

So, why is it that even previously healthy people can quickly develop cardiovascular problems as they get older, which remain with them for the rest of their lives? Part of the answer involves blood platelets – tiny cell fragments which circulate in our blood vessels in their millions. These platelets’ main job is to stick together in case of injury, and stem blood loss. But blood platelets can become sticky, raising blood pressure and causing dangerous blood clots inside the body.

Our bodies naturally produce chemicals which help to keep our platelets under control and circulating smoothly. The most potent of these is an important molecule called nitric oxide (NO). NO is responsible for calming blood platelets, which allows blood to circulate smoothly and keeps blood vessels relaxed, which also controls blood pressure. Unfortunately, from the age of 40 NO production decreases, and the natural cardioprotection it gives us decreases too. Without its calming action, blood platelets become sticky and less resilient to stress. This accelerates the risk of heart disease, raises blood pressure, and can increase the likelihood of dangerous blood clots. But there’s much we can do to protect our cardiovascular system and supplement this lost natural protection as we age.

How to reduce your risk of heart disease over the age of 40

Whilst diet and exercise remain key, we’ve specifically developed Fruitflow®+ Omega-3 to help fill this gap in our natural defences. It’s a completely natural, clinically proven dietary antiplatelet which means it works to smooth the blood platelets, and so help to protect against their hyperactivity and unwanted blood clots. Combining it with omega-3 aims to enhance the heart health benefits of both ingredients.
