Guest Blog from Angie Klein Yoga: Listening to the Heart.

The LightNews

As if you didn’t know, we are living in very unusual times at the moment.

What is happening in the world right now is entirely beyond our control and our sense of what is normal is changing daily. Although the current situation is making many people stressed and anxious, it is also important at times like these to think about what you can actually control.

Our heart may seem so noisy at the moment that we simply cannot associate it with silence. It takes a sensitive ear to tune in to the silence of the heart. You can hear it though – because it is there in every one of us.

So, this month I have teamed up with the lovely folks at Fruitflow+ Omega-3 and we have an amazing HEALTHY HEART PACKAGE to give away to one lucky winner! Read on….

Healthy blood flow is just as important in keeping your cardiovascular system strong as maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure. With every heartbeat, blood is pumped through a system of blood vessels that carry blood throughout your body, delivering critical nutrients and oxygen to every cell. A strong, healthy cardiovascular system means the heart, blood vessels and blood circulation are all working well. Those who find they consistently have high and sustained levels of stress will have a high level of cortisol and epinephrine in their blood stream – both of these are associated with spiky platelets and so will put the cardiovascular system under significant stress.

And Fruitflow+ Omega-3 can help. Fruitflow+ Omega-3 harnesses the natural goodness of ripe tomatoes and oily marine fish – two heart-healthy ingredients – in order to smooth blood platelets, maintain healthy blood flow and help maintain a healthy heart. Fruitflow is 100% natural and the ONLY natural antiplatelet to have a health claim approved by the European Food Safety Authority and the European Commission.

…. Bring heart focused breath awareness, yoga and meditation into the mix and you have a powerful combination.

In yoga the mind and body are reflections of each other. By combining good breath awareness with regular yoga and meditation practice, we can improve the quality of our life.

Slow, conscious stretches that release tensional holding patterns, together with yoga postures with breathing that shift the nervous system into relaxation, invoke the power of breath and innate wisdom. This helps move blocked energy and refreshes perception, and it helps us to listen and tune into the silence of the heart.

We can bring our awareness into our hearts by simply breathing into the general area of our heart. The first thing we may notice is feelings like joy or sadness and physical sensations like tightness or tenderness. We acknowledge these feelings as we continue to breathe and focus, listening attentively. And, as we slowly empty our heart of the noise, we start to hear the silence of the heart. The more we listen for it, return to it and accept it, the more we purify ourselves in the soundless centre of our being.

Let’s start with posture

During stress we usually go into a protective posture – an all too familiar hunched forward position that protects the heart. And during this unprecedented time, we find ourselves having to spend much more time indoors, hunching over computers and on smartphones and tablets. The muscles in the shoulder and upper chest scrunch up while your upper back muscles become weak. This muscle imbalance can cause chest pain and restrict your range of motion. Throw a stressed and frozen rib cage into the mix and you have a recipe for oxygen depletion. All that upper body tension is a not good news. The next thing you know, the pain is travelling all the way down your spine into your lower back. Heart-opening yoga poses can help reverse that process.

Yoga helps with emotional rescue too

The body stores emotions and heart opening yoga poses are particularly good for releasing sadness, grief, anger, stress and frustration. The more you expand your sternum, rib cage and the rest of your upper body with heart-opener exercises, the more blood, oxygen and nerve circulation will be freed up to invigorate your mental and physical wellbeing.

In a nutshell… by lifting the heart, moving the shoulders back and lengthening the front of the body, we can decrease pain, shoulder tightness and improve our spirits.

We can’t control what is happening in the world at the moment but there are ways we can reduce how stressed we feel and the impact it might be having on our health and our heart.
